My name is Sander de Jong. I am an amateur astrophotographer from Zaltbommel, the Netherlands, with a strong interest in astronomy, deep-sky imaging, and making the universe more understandable for others.
From my own observing location near the river Waal, I photograph objects that are often far beyond what the human eye can see: nebulae, galaxies, star clusters, the Moon, the Sun, and the planets. Astrophotography combines several things I enjoy deeply: the beauty of the night sky, the precision of technology, and the patience needed to collect and process light that has sometimes travelled for thousands or even millions of years before reaching us.
Besides creating images, I like to explain what we are actually looking at. A photograph of a nebula or galaxy becomes much more meaningful when you know where it is, how far away it is, what kind of object it is, and what physical processes are taking place there. My goal is therefore not only to show beautiful astronomical images, but also to add context: scientifically grounded, accessible, and suitable for people with different levels of background knowledge.
I am also involved with the Halley Public Observatory, where public outreach and education play an important role. I believe astronomy is one of the most powerful ways to spark curiosity. It connects everyday questions with the largest scales imaginable: from our own Moon and Sun to distant galaxies and the early universe.
On this website I share my astrophotography, background information about the objects I photograph, and projects that help visualise the cosmos in new ways. One of those projects is 4D AstroDepth Mapper, a PixInsight plugin I created that explores the distances of stars and galaxies visible in an astrophotograph. It turns a flat image into an interactive journey through depth — from nearby stars to the far reaches of the observable universe.
For me, astrophotography is not just about taking pictures of space. It is about discovering what those images represent, sharing that story, and helping others experience the scale, beauty, and wonder of the universe.
